The 19-year old has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane.
Tottenham’s hopes of adding to their front line took a blow today as Anthony Martial’s agent gave an update on his contract situation to French press.
“We have had a constructive meeting today [Wednesday].” Philippe Lamboley informed L’Equipe.
“There is a detail that remains, but we are close to an agreement for a contract extension of one year [until 2019].”
The Frenchman is among Europe’s most highly-rated young forwards and his signing would have been one to get the Spurs faithful excited ahead of the new season.
Spurs had opened talks to sign the Monaco man, as per Sky Sports, but if his agent's comments are to be believed, a deal now looks unlikely.
The need to offer support to Harry Kane is undoubtedly Spurs’ most pressing area of business this transfer window, with Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor out of favour and both set to leave.
The race is now on to draft in some replacement attacking options, with a wide forward and central striker required.
Who has been linked?
Stuttgart youngster Timo Werner was rumoured to interest Spurs earlier this month, by the likes of the Daily Mail, and would provide much-needed pace and directness in wide areas. Talk has quietened since then however, and any move looks like being on ice for time being.
Another Monaco talent, Ferreira Carrasco, was today linked to Tottenham, with Le10 Sport claiming Spurs had failed with a bid for the 21-year old.
With pre-season just under a week away, Spurs fans will be anxious for more incomings sooner rather than later. Clever business has been done in defensive areas thus far, with the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Kevin Wimmer, but up top is where the focus must now be.
