Report: Newcastle boss Steve McClaren big admirer of West Brom’s Craig Dawson

West Bromwich Albion defender Craig Dawson is reportedly being targeted by Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are interested in signing Craig Dawson from West Bromwich Albion this summer, according to ESPN.

It has been reported that newly-appointed Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren is a “big admirer” of the 25-year-old defender and wants him as part of his team for the 2015-16 campaign.

According to ESPN, McClaren tried to sign the versatile defender when he was in charge of Championship outfit Derby County.

Would Craig Dawson be a good signing for Newcastle United?

Newcastle struggled defensively during the recently concluded 2014-15 season, and they do need a strong and established defender.

Dawson knows the Premier League inside out, and his ability to play at centre-back and at right-back means that the Magpies will virtually get two defenders for the price of one.

During the 2014-15 campaign, the Englishman scored two goals and created five chances in 29 league appearances.

Dawson had a pass accuracy of 74% and a shot accuracy of 31%, and he won 106 headers, seven dribbles and 39 tackles.
