The Newcastle man is wanted to replace West Ham transfer target Payet.
The Guardian have reported that Payet has agreed four-year contract with the Hammers, and is set to travel to England today to undergo a medical. Should all go smoothly, it is expected that the transfer will be officially confirmed by the end of this week.
However, this is not sitting well with Marseille’s fans, who do not want to lose a player vital to their fortunes. Club president Vincent Labrune is working hard to ensure a replacement is found as soon as possible to appease the support, and the La Provence report claims Remy Cabella is being targeted.
Cabella, 25, moved to Newcastle from Montpellier last summer, but failed to live up to his reputation. He scored just one goal in 34 games, and his struggles were tantamount to Newcastle’s failure to put up a fight in the Premier League.
Yet, this has not put off Marseille, who are keen on bringing him back to France as Payet’s replacement, with Cabella reportedly wanting to leave England. The Ligue 1 outfit are prepared to offer him a one-year loan deal, having also tried to sign him in 2013.
There are no indications as to whether Steve McClaren will sanction a move for Cabella, as he could see him as a key part of his first-team squad, bu if Cabella truly wants to leave England he could push through a move to depart St James' Park.
