Report: Aston Villa in pole position to sign Stoke City's Asmir Begovic

Chelsea have been strongly linked with Begovic, and he's reportedly attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool in the past.

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is attracting interest from Aston Villa according to a report in the Stoke Sentinel, and the Potters would apparently seek close to £10 million.

Speculation surrounding Begovic's future has been in the background for much of the past year as the Bosnian only has a year remaining on his contract at the Britannia Stadium.

Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been mentioned as potentially interested clubs by the likes of Metro, but none have appeared to make a move for the highly rated stopper.

It is thought Tim Sherwood wants Begovic to become his number one goalkeeper at Villa Park with Shay Given and Brad Guzan his current options.

Metro claims that In recent days Begovic has reportedly been attracting the attentions of Chelsea because of the imminent departure of Petr Cech, who is highly likely to depart Stamford Bridge for Arsenal, and Jose Mourinho wants sufficient cover for Thibaut Courtois.

But the offer of regular games could mean Begovic may be more tempted by a move to Villa instead of playing second fiddle at a club - even if they are competing at the very highest level.

The Sentinel also states that a move to Villa would be easier for Begovic's family life and will mean there is no real need for him to move which suggests any potential deal could satisfy both the player and Aston Villa - though Stoke could have a job on their hands finding a suitable replacement if they don't look to promote from within.
