Report: Arsenal launch bid for Chelsea’s Charly Musonda

The Chelsea prospect is believed to have caught the eye of Arsene Wenger.

Much has been made of Chelsea’s lack of youth promotion - John Terry was the last academy product to become an established first team player - but Charly Musonda is among their biggest hopes.

The 19-year old has drawn comparisons to Claude Makelele in his time at Chelsea and starred in last season’s FA Youth Cup victory.

Arsene Wenger was apparently impressed and Arsenal have launched an £8.5 million bid for the youngster, according to Foot Mercato.

Musonda has been linked with a move away from Chelsea and there was talk of him being loaned to Monaco as part of the deal for Radamel Falcao – as reported by the Telegraph.

The player himself addressed the Arsenal interest and refused to rule out a move, as per The Metro.

Will Chelsea sell?

It would be an unpopular decision for Jose Mourinho to sanction the sale of one of Chelsea’ best young talents but the simple fact is that the size and quality of the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge means Musonda will not get a look in for the foreseeable future.

A loan move, rather than a permanent deal, would be a better decision on Chelsea’s end but Arsenal's bid represents a sizeable fee for a player yet to play a senior competitive game.

It's possible the Chelsea hierarchy place less emphasis on bringing through academy talent than the media and fans would like, and £8.5 million may prove too tempting to turn down.
