Report: Adam Matthews could leave Celtic, Russell Slade denies Cardiff interest

Celtic defender Adam Matthews has been linked with a summer exit - but a return to Cardiff is unlikely.

According to The Sun, Celtic defender Adam Matthews could leave the club as Manchester United right back Saidy Janko prepares to join the Bhoys.

Matthews, 23, has been regular for Celtic ever since joining from Cardiff in 2011, but his future has been thrown into doubt by Celtic's bid for Janko.

The 19-year-old Swiss defender is set to join Celtic permanently according to the Daily Mail, and with Mikael Lustig already in the ranks, Matthews' future is in question.

A move back to Cardiff is one idea which has surfaced, and Bluebirds boss Russell Slade was asked about the possibility of bringing the defender back to South Wales - but told Wales Online that he won't be pursuing Matthews, and will stick with former Leeds man Lee Peltier instead.

"We have solid cover at the back and won’t be bringing in a right-back," said Slade, seemingly ruling out the prospect of a return for the Welshman.

What does the future hold for Matthews?

Celtic's bid to sign Janko suggests that the teenager will primarily be developing behind Lustig as the first choice, leaving Matthews in limbo.

There is bound to be interest from clubs south of the border, given how well Matthews fared during his time with Cardiff - but Celtic are bound to want over £1m for the Welsh international.

That could deter come teams from bidding for Matthews, but if Celtic do sign Janko, the future could be bleak for Matthews in Glasgow.
