England’s under-21 side failed to impress as they crashed out of the under-21 European Championship last night with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Italy.
Nathan Redmond grabbed England’s only goal of the game, but the whole performance seemed lethargic and not along the lines of what fans have come to expect from the stars at their Premier League clubs.
Here are our player ratings for the game.
Butland (Stoke City) – 6
Generally a tidy performance and can’t be blamed for the goals England conceded.
Jenkinson (Arsenal) – 6
Worked hard but looked isolated and exposed at times, which left him on the back foot.
Stones (Everton) – 6
His quality in terms of playing out from the back was great, but he looked a little off the pace under pressure.
Gibson (Middlesbrough) – 5
Didn’t spot the run when a ball was played in behind him, which allowed Italy to score.
Garbutt (Everton) – 5
Final ball was woeful at times. Looked as though his mind was on other things throughout the game.
Chalobah (Chelsea) – 5
Got forward a bit more than in previous games, but had no real impact.
Forster-Caskey (Brighton and Hove Albion) – 5
The Brighton midfielder worked hard but like Chalobah, couldn’t really get into the game.
Lingard (Manchester United) – 6
Looked bright at times playing forward in midfield. One of the only players who looked like making anything happen.
Ings (Liverpool) – 5
Pressure of the match seemed to get to him and he looked a touch panicky in front of goal.
Redmond (Norwich City) – 5
Got himself a goal but he was very inconsistent throughout the game.
Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) – 5
Didn’t have much service. Looked tired at times and an upcoming rest will do him some good.
