Danny Welbeck admits he idolised Thierry Henry as a child

Welbeck Claps

The England international was a big fan of the Arsenal legend, despite being a supporter and player for Manchester United.

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck has revealed that he used to be a big follower of Gunners icon Thierry Henry when he was younger, in an interview with the club's website.

That's not difficult to imagine, until you remember that Welbeck spent 13 years at Old Trafford, coming up through the Manchester United academy as a Red Devils fan no less.

But the 25-year-old admitted that, no matter which team you supported, it was hard not to appreciate the quality Henry demonstrated at Arsenal.

“It was hard because I was a United fan and we were playing against Arsenal, but it’s hard not to like Thierry Henry,” Welbeck told the Gunners website.

“That’s what was so special about him - fans from other teams had to love him because he was that good. At the time all the kids around my area liked Thierry Henry."

Words like that are only going to endear Welbeck to Arsenal supporters even more, while United fans will have to be placated by their former forward comparing the Frenchman to one of their own legends.

“When I was watching the Premier League on TV I was seeing what Thierry Henry was doing and it’s just something that you can’t look away from," he added.

“I just loved the way he played, the way he scored goals, the way he played with the team. It was great and it’s the same with Ryan Giggs, I loved watching him for Manchester United.”

The next season is a big one for Welbeck

Though he enjoyed decent season after moving from his boyhood club, Welbeck failed to really take off despite an encouraging start.

The Englishman was utilised up front initially with Olivier Giroud out injured in the early weeks of the season, a position he rarely featured in during his last couple of years at Old Trafford. But once players returned to fitness and form, Welbeck often found himself once more playing out wide for his club side.

There is still some uncertainty as to where he will fit in when Arsenal have a fully fit squad, but if Welbeck can take nothing else from his former favourite Henry, it's that even the very best forwards in the world spent some time out on the wing.
