Liverpool are stepping up their pursuit of Nathaniel Clyne, and the defender is keen to join, report The Telegraph.
The biggest factor in Liverpool's favour is the claim: "It is understood the defender is open to the prospect of a new challenge on Merseyside."
Clyne has only one year remaining on his current deal at Southampton, weakening the Saints negotiating position for the England international right-back.
The defender would follow the arrivals of Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez, James Milner, Danny Ings, and Adam Bogdan as Liverpool seek to get their transfer business off to an early start.
Change in formation?
Last season Liverpool played with three at the back, but this is not a formation Clyne has been accustomed to with either Southampton or England.
A specialist right-back, Clyne would be better off playing in a back four and the Reds should reconsider their set up if they are to get the best out of him.
Clyne's arrival could hasten the departure of loanee Javier Manquillo, while Glen Johnson will no longer be around with his contract set to expire at the end of this month.
His arrival would be a blow for defender Andre Wisdom, who signed a renewed contract earlier this month, and had hoped to earn a shot at the starting right-back berth.
