Villa have already made one summer signing by snapping up defender Micah Richards on a free transfer from Manchester City, but manager Sherwood will be pursuing other targets now.
The Birmingham Mail believe that Sherwood has now set his sights on signing Charlton youngster Jordan Cousins this summer, having lost Tom Cleverley to Everton.
Cousins, 21, has emerged through the ranks at Charlton, playing 94 games over the last two seasons having become a key figure at The Valley.
It's also stated that Sherwood admires Cousins having tracked his progress for some time - but a deal with Charlton could be difficult, given that Guy Luzon's men just sold another youth product, Joe Gomez, to Liverpool last week.
What would Cousins bring to Aston Villa?
Cousins is a versatile player who can play both out wide and in the centre of midfield, which would help Sherwood if he chooses to stick with the middle diamond next season.
With athleticism and energy in midfield, Cousins could make an impact immediately should he join Villa, but would most likely be considered as one for the future.
Given Sherwood's work with young players before, Cousins could find the perfect manager to develop under - if Villa can strike a deal with Championship side Charlton.
