Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom's future could be in doubt following Joe Gomez’s arrival

Has Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers bought Andre Wisdom’s replacement just months after offering him a new deal?

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will face some tough decisions this summer, but few tougher than what to do with defensive duo Andre Wisdom and Joe Gomez.

As young talented English defenders go, the former Swansea boss would have been hard pushed to find one as similar as Wisdom and now faces the difficult decision of what to do with both players going into the new season.

We take a look at two key questions Brendan Rodgers is going to need to make a decision on before the transfer window shuts.

Are Wisdom or Gomez going to be first choice next season?

Although it’s likely one, not both, will be in and around the Liverpool first team next season, it’s highly unlikely either will be the first name on the team sheet.

Rodgers will get the chance to look at both players in pre-season and then he can make a decision on who is best suited to play in the first team next season.

If Gomez falls below the required standard, it’s likely he will sent out on loan to a Championship club in order for another year’s experience. However, if Wisdom shows himself to be the lesser of the two then his long-term future will be less clear.

Which position are Wisdom and Gomez going to be employed in?

As both players can play at right-back and at centre-back, it’s up to Rodgers to decide where he sees both defenders' future positions in his side.

Wisdom has spent the majority of his two loan spells at West Brom and Derby County playing at right-back, despite showing the qualities more suited to a centre-back. Whereas, Gomez has been largely brought up playing at the heart of the defence, with the odd cameo on the right hand side.

Whether Rodgers sees them one day playing in the same team, despite their similarities, could depend on where he plans to play them.

In a 3-5-2 formation, both would be suited to playing on the right hand side of a central defensive three. However, they would be unlikely to shine playing in a wing back role.
