Houghton doubtful Tim Sherwood will be backed over transfers by Aston Villa

Former Aston Villa midfielder Ray Houghton isn't hopeful that Tim Sherwood will get the investment he needs to progress the club this summer.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Ray Houghton told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that he doesn’t think the club will get the investment to improve this summer.

Houghton has suggested that it’s vital for Villa to keep their key players because of how difficult it will be for manager Tim Sherwood to improve the squad should he lose any key individuals in important areas of the squad.

“They can’t really afford to lose any of their major players. They struggled at the back end of the season once again and that’s three years in a row near the relegation zone so they need investment, but they’re not going to get it because Randy Lerner has said he’s going to take a back seat,” he told talkSPORT.

Who might leave Aston Villa this summer?

There are a couple of rumours floating which suggest Sherwood could have his work cut out in terms of keeping certain players.

The Daily Express has reported that Chelsea are considering a move for Chistian Benteke, while the Daily Telegraph recently reported that Fabian Delph is an apparent target for Manchester City.

Should Aston Villa lose either player, it creates a big hole in two areas of the team, which would have knock on effects for the club at the start of the Premier League season.

The unfortunate reality over investment

The problem Sherwood has is that he’ll have plans and ideas over where he wants to develop in other areas.

If he’s not going to get financial help from the owner, the only way he might get some extra cash is by selling one of his best players.

It may be difficult for Villa to sell someone like Benteke, but ultimately, he’s someone who could net a big fee allowing Sherwood to invest in other areas.
