Why are Tottenham Hotspur reportedly considering keeping one player and loaning out another when the latter could be highly effective?
But if that is true it begs a very simple question: Why?
Townsend featured 35 times for Tottenham last season, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in the process, but he has failed to kick on following his initial breakthrough campaign and if anything he has gone backwards.
At 23, and with 86 senior appearances for Spurs under his belt, the England international should be delivering a lot more, and the report suggesting he is important to Pochettino’s plans next season is even more baffling when you consider the rumours circulating regarding DeAndre Yedlin.
The USA international has barely had a sniff at White Hart Lane since he arrived in January, but with a full pre-season behind him the new campaign would be the perfect chance for Pochettino to see what he can do.
With Kieran Trippier recently signed for £3.5million, a starting spot at right-back just got considerably harder to come by for Yedlin, but the 21-year-old’s speed is such that a spell on the wing could be brilliant for both player and club.
Yedlin has unbelievable pace and he could make a wonderful impact substitute when Tottenham need to change the game. Instead the Daily Mail are reporting that Derby County, Bolton Wanderers and Burnley are looking to take the American on loan next season.
Considering Yedlin’s undeniable talent, the fact he has a World Cup campaign under his belt and his versatility, he should stay.
Let’s put it this way, if Yedlin played the same amount of games as Townsend next season, the former has the tools to put the latter in the shade.
