He also says that a top three finish in the Premier League is good given the level of competition.
The Chilean came under increasing pressure last season as his side struggled to defend their Premier League title against Chelsea, while they were also knocked out of both domestic cups and the Champions League.
The failure to once again defend their title has been criticised by many now that the campaign is done with, but Pellegrini insists finishing in the top three constitutes a good season in the Premier League.
"We had a normal Premier League season, because in England to finish within the top three is a good season,” he told El Mercurio.
“There are five teams who can win the title and we were second. Our level was very poor level in the cups, because we were eliminated by Newcastle, who had a youth team; and Middlesbrough.”
Of course, while a Premier League title challenge is almost a given these days for City, the Champions League is an altogether different prospect.
Being relatively new to the competition, the Blues have struggled to compete with Europe’s bigger sides, although there was an impressive win against Bayern Munich last season that stands in their credit.
They were however; comfortably beaten by eventual champions Barcelona in the early parts of the knockout stages, although Pellegrini says that was a predictable outcome.
“We were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona, that was predictable,” he added.
“Maybe the best season belonged to Arsenal, who came third, but earned a trophy. Ours was only average no more.”
