Why Tottenham should give Mousa Dembele the freedom they once gave Luka Modric

Mousa Dembele could be an integral part of this Tottenham Hotspur side if he had the freedom once given to a fan favourite.

According to a recent report from the Sun, Chelsea are interested in signing Totteham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele for £12million, but if the Belgian international was used effectively he could prove vital for Spurs next season.

The 27-year-old played 40 times for Tottenham last season but that number does not tell the whole story, with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino more often than not using him for brief periods rather than entire matches.

There was a time in February when it looked like the penny had finally dropped for both the manager and the player, with Dembele shining in matches against West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal and Liverpool and getting his only goal and assist of the campaign in the process.

But too soon Dembele was back on the bench, given 30-minute run-outs rather than having the team built around him.

Another season is approaching, and if Tottenham want to see the best of Dembele they should give him the freedom they once gave Luka Modric.

The Croatian international shone at White Hart Lane but only because he was allowed to, and if Pochettino shows the same kind of faith in Dembele the Spurs faithful could see a different player next season.

If the latest report of interest from Chelsea is true, then Blues boss Jose Mourinho certainly sees something in Dembele, but Tottenham would be wise to reject any advances and give the Belgian the freedom to show what he can do in his best position.

They may be surprised by what happens if they do…
