Report: Everton latest team to enter race to sign Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna

Everton

Everton want to sign Ogbonna, along with West Ham, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

The Juventus centre-back looks to be on his way out of Italy this summer, and the Liverpool Echo have reported that Everton are the latest team to show an interest in signing him.

The 27-year-old has reportedly emerged as Roberto Martinez’s main defensive target for the summer transfer window, following the exits of Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz, although they face stiff competition for his signature from a host of Premier League clubs.

The 10-capped Italian international centre-back is also wanted by Aston Villa, as per TMW, Tottenham, also per TMW, as well as Liverpool and West Ham, according to ESPN.

It is no surprise that he has a wealth of transfer interest, due to being a top class central defender, and due to him being available on the market as he searches for more first-team football.

Would Everton be wise to sign Ogbonna?

With Distin and Alcaraz now off Everton’s books, there is a shortage of cover in the central defensive positions, especially with John Stones’ future still in doubt. The Toffees could realistically start the season with just Phil Jagielka to select at centre-half, and Ogbonna would not only be good cover, but would arguably be the best defender in the playing squad.
