Oldham Athletic boss Darren Kelly was in high spirits when talking to the Oldham Evening Chronicle about new signing George Green.
The 35-year-old dubbed the signing of the former Everton youngster as ‘exciting’ and boasted that once upon a time he was wanted by the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
‘’Both the club and I have been aware of George for quite a long time,’’ said Kelly to the Chronicle. ‘’I’ve seen him play in the under-21s Premier League when I was at Sunderland, while the club knew all about him at Everton via Joe [Royle]. Our fans can rest assured we have a top-quality player on our hands.
‘’I’m not party to the reasons why Everton let him go, but I know at one point lots of massive clubs wanted George – Manchester United and Tottenham included.
‘’He’s an exciting talent, he’s just great with the ball at his feet and I can’t wait for him to show us all exactly what he can do.’’
Can this be the turning point in Green’s footballing career?
Once regarded as one of Everton’s brightest prospects, Green has seen his development stall recently and it was little surprise when it was announced he had departed the club.
The move to Oldham, who play their football in League One, will give the 19-year-old a good chance to get regular game time and provide a platform to finally realise his potential.
Kelly, who was appointed the Latics boss at the beginning of last month, clearly has high hopes for Green and with age on his side, he still has the chance to grow into a player that can establish himself in the Premier League.
League One is where he will need to prove himself first, though, as he will no doubt be tasked with playing a key part in a side looking to win promotion to the Championship next season.
