Richards was recently unveiled as a defensive addition to the Aston Villa squad ahead of next season, as he returns to English football with a point to prove following a spell on loan with Fiorentina from Manchester City last season.
Houghton has explained that he feels Sherwood will get the best qualities out of Richards, giving him the best possible chance of being successful under his new employers.
“Tim’s a very good strong minded manager and he’ll get the best out of him, he’ll get him to knuckle down and show that he’s training extremely well and then he’s got to focus on the matches coming up,” he told talkSPORT.
How will Sherwood get more out of Richards?
Sherwood is a good manager for Richards because he’ll find a way to challenge him and a way to get the player feeling as though he’s got a point to prove.
Sherwood is superb at getting the best out of players because he puts across the belief and confidence he has in what he’s trying to achieve at Aston Villa.
Richards should buy into that idea and should have a spring in his step as he goes about any performance in an Aston Villa shirt.
Best approach over Richards
Sherwood will likely tell Richards that it’s a level playing field once the players get back together for pre-season.
He’ll want to see something in Richards, which shows him why he deserves to be in the Aston Villa first team ahead of any other player.
However, at the same time, it’s important Sherwood puts an arm around Richards to try and understand where the player is coming from and what he wants to achieve.
