Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori will be given a chance to prove himself to Brendan Rodgers this pre-season after talks with the club.

Tiago Ilori could be an option for Brendan Rodgers next season after Kola Ilori – the player’s father – told Portuguese radio, as quoted by Mais Futebol, the youngster will get a chance to prove himself this pre-season.

The 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan to Ligue 1 giants Bordeaux, is expected to join up with the Reds on their tour of Thailand as he will get the chance to put himself in Rodgers’ plans for next season.

‘’We talked last week with Liverpool on the future of James,’’ confirmed the defender’s father. ‘’They say he will get a chance and it will be on the pre-season tour of Thailand.’’

Kola also mentioned that Sunderland have enquired about his son’s availability, but hinted the temperature of the North East could hinder any potential deal.

Should Rodgers give Ilori a chance this season?

After last season, the former Swansea boss should be looking at starting again with a clean slate and seeing who in his squad could offer him something next season.

IIori is largely untested in England and any decision made on the player should be well-examined as the Reds cannot afford to lose a potential gem ahead of next season’s race for the top four.

Although he may not be the answer for Rodgers, and could look to be moved on, the decision should come well after the pre-season tour of Thailand and made with the best interests of the player in mind.

New signing Joe Gomez, as well as returning loanee Andre Wisdom, will also be fighting for a place in the Liverpool squad next season as competition heats up.
