Robert Earnshaw says Stuart Pearce should apologise for these comments

Stuart Pearce

Back in 1995, former Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and West Ham star Stuart Pearce said that signing Dennis Bergkamp was a waste of money for Arsenal.

Robert Earnshaw has suggested on social networking site Twitter that former West Ham United and Newcastle United defender Stuart Pearce should apologise for comments he made about Dennis Bergkamp 20 years ago.

Back in 1995, Arsenal signed Bergkamp from Italian club Inter Milan. Among the many sceptics of the move was Pearce, who was playing for Nottingham Forest at the time.

“I would have taken Stan Collymore ahead of Bergkamp, even for £1 million more,” the Englishman said at the time, according to “Liverpool have got a better deal than Arsenal.”

Former Derby and Forest striker, who is currently on the books of Major League Soccer outfit Vancouver Whitecaps, believes that Pearce should apologise for those comments.

In hindsight, Pearce’s comments were harsh, as Bergkamp went on to establish himself as one of the greatest players of all time, scoring 120 goals in 423 appearances for Arsenal.

The former Netherlands international attacker played for the Gunners from 1995 to 2006, winning the Premier League three times, the FA Cup on four occasions and the FA Community Shield thrice.
