Report: Newcastle interested in former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole

Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole is reportedly being targeted by Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are interested in signing Ashley Cole from AS Roma this summer, according to The Daily Star.

The 34-year-old defender joined Roma on a free transfer in the summer of 2014 after leaving Chelsea and has a contract until June 2016, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

The left-back struggled to establish himself as an important player for the Italian club in the recently concluded 2014-15 season, making just 11 appearances in Serie A.

Cole created only four chances, had a pass accuracy of 90% and a shot accuracy of 25%, and won two headers, three dribbles and 16 tackles.

It has now been reported by The Daily Star that Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren is willing to sign the former Arsenal and Chelsea defender on a season-long loan deal this summer.

Strange move

It would be a strange move from Newcastle to sign a player - even on loan - who is 34 years of age and clearly past his prime.

Cole will go down in history as one of the greatest left-backs in Premier League history, but he is not someone that the Magpies need for the 2015-16 campaign.

Perhaps McClaren wants to sign Cole because of his experience, and maybe the former Nottingham Forest manager believes that he can be a important player for his team.
