Monreal comments suggest possible problem for Wenger at Arsenal

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal feels there aren't too many youngsters knocking on the door for a chance under Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal named two player he feels can emulate Hector Bellerin in the Gunners first team next season, when he gave an interview to Arsenal Blog.

Bellerin has excelled under the guidance of Arsene Wenger, who gave him a chance to impress in the club’s first team following a shoulder injury to Mathieu Debuchy last season.

Monreal feels there are two players who could potentially break through, but also suggests the cupboard is looking a little bare for the manager.

“I don’t know, there are not a lot many more players younger than Hector. [In the first team squad] there’s only Serge Gnabry and Chuba [Akpom], maybe. It’s difficult to say,” he said.

What are Gnabry’s chances of regular game time next season?

Slim, based on the current wide options Wenger has available.

Alexis Sanchez is guaranteed starts in a wide role, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott (if they both stay) providing the width on the right.

The German has to focus on how he can change his situation through pre-season. It may also be the case that he’s limited in terms of appearances to the domestic cup competitions next season and he needs to cash in when he’s given those opportunities.

What are Akpom’s chances of game time next season?

Equally slim and not a lot is likely to have changed from when Wenger commissioned his loan move to Nottingham Forest last season.

He needs to get fit and then needs to play out of his skin to put some pressure on the other forwards at the club, but he’s not going to be starting the first game against West Ham unless there’s an injury crisis.

Loan deals the best option?

Definitely considering the lack of first team game time they will both see if they stay where they are.
