What if Lee Erwin is as good as it gets at Leeds United this summer?
Leeds United have acted early in the transfer market this summer, but is there more to come?
Back-up goalkeeper Charlie Horton signed along with Motherwell forward Lee Erwin, and defender Sol Bamba is expected to come in permanently after a successful loan from Palermo.
Supporters are awaiting a marquee signing, but what if one never arrives? What if Erwin is as exciting as it gets, and the rest of the additions are free agents or low-profile recruits from Serie B?
Leeds' budget for the summer transfer window is unknown although there are no indications as yet it will be high; barring the sale of a high profile player.
Will it be enough?
For all their promise last season Leeds were marred by inconsistency, largely coming from off-field distractions. The squad is not sufficiently improved to overcome these again, and a promotion challenge may once again be out of their reach.
Last season Leeds finished in 15th place, a huge 22 points away from the play-offs. Lee Erwin and a group of free transfer is not enough to help them make this up.
Leeds have been active in tying their promising under-21 talent to new deals, and it is likely that Sam Parkin, Tyler Denton and Chris Dawson are granted opportunities over the course of the coming season.
This provides extra squad depth and will help the side feel more close-knit that adding in a group of players from abroad who could have filled the positions, given the reported claims of a split dressing room last season.
Lee Erwin is a bright talent who Leeds clearly hope will become an integral part of their set up next season.
From an attacking sense however more is needed, with Leeds' attack often one-dimensional last season, lacking width and scoring just 50 goals in 46 games.
The club need to invest around him, not only signing wingers but also an experienced face in midfield especially with Rodolph Austin released, but it will also be about quality rather than simply ticking boxes - and the club may want to raise the bar that their marquee summer addition is not Erwin, but a new addition yet to be determined.
