As confirmed recently by the Aston Villa official website, the England international defender opted to trade Manchester City for the Villains on a free transfer after running down his contract at the Etihad stadium.
Richards joins Tim Sherwood’s men on a four-year deal and earned plenty of praise from his new boss on his arrival, who told the club's official website: “I'm sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club."
Predominantly a right-back, the 26-year-old is also capable of playing in the middle and it’s his versatility among other attributes which Redknapp believes makes him an outstanding signing for Villa.
“Tim Sherwood has got one of the best bargains of the transfer window in this versatile defender. Micah is not the best around on the ball but he is still only 26 yet seems to have been playing at the top level for years,” Redknapp wrote in The Sun.
“A free transfer from Manchester City he will improve on what Villa have at the moment and he can also play centre half if required,” he added.
What will Micah Richards give Aston Villa?
Richard’s is more than just a capable defender, he is an athlete of sheer power and strength and is well suited to the long slog of a Premier League campaign.
Villa were often vulnerable from set-pieces last season, but their new addition will help eradicate this somewhat with his aerial ability and eagerness to defend.
Richards was once a key member of a City side chasing the Premier League title, and with Sherwood renowned for getting the best out of his players he potentially has a big talent on his hands.
