Could Tottenham Hotspur be closing in on their third defensive signing of the summer?
The Belgian international spent last season on loan at Southampton where he impressed week in, week out, ending the campaign with 28 appearances and plenty of new admirers. And while it would have been no surprise to see him convert his loan spell into a permanent move this summer, it appears Tottenham may get their man.
The Sunday Times claims Alderweireld has been impressed by Tottenham during conversations about a potential summer switch and that he has told friends he is close to a move to White Hart Lane.
It has also been suggested that Alderweireld has been told he will be first-choice centre-back and that he believes playing alongside Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen every week would only be good for his international aspirations with Euro 2016 just a year away.
Alderweireld would be a wonderful addition to Tottenham’s squad, with defence clearly an area in need of strengthening following some poor showings last season.
Overall Tottenham did well under Mauricio Pochettino but too often they fell short and they will be hoping to build on their fifth-place finish.
At 26 and already used to Premier League football, Alderweireld would be a savvy signing; the question is: What would that mean for Kevin Wimmer who only arrived himself earlier this summer.
