The Tunisia international has plenty of suitors this summer with Newcastle United credited as one of them as per a Saturday night report in the Mirror.
The Magpies are keen to get their summer transfer activity underway as so far newly-appointed boss Steve McClaren has been left frustrated in his quest to strengthen the squad.
Acquiring Abdennour will be no easy task, and reports from France suggest Newcastle are already looking at yet another potential target heading elsewhere, with the Milan duo in prime position to sign him.
“Newcastle and Tottenham have expressed a strong interest in the Tunisian, but the two most interested clubs in Abdennour are AC Milan and Inter. With the arrival of new investors, both clubs are competing with each other for a number of summer targets,” the report from France Football states.
A new centre-back a must this summer?
Newcastle defensively were often a spent force last season, though it’s hard to judge whether regular centre-backs Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson were hindered by the team shape.
Irrespective, it represents an area for improvement and it appears Steve McClaren is actively seeking to strengthen it, Schalke’s Joel Marip also linked via a report in the German paper Bild.
The Geordies have so far seemingly failed in their bid to sign a number of reported targets, but patience is required and there is still plenty of time left before the squad is due back for pre-season training.
