According to Sport Italia transfer guru Alfredo Pedulla, Inter Milan will tell Liverpool to cough up around £21.5 million to complete a quick deal for midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
The Croatia international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer as Brendan Rodgers seeks to strengthen his midfield ranks.
While those reports have yet to materialise into anything more concrete, Inter Milan’s imminent agreement to sign Geoffrey Kondogbia, as per Sky Sports Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio, may affect fellow midfielder Kovacic.
Moreover, Roberto Mancini’s men are believed to be in deep negotiations with another midfielder, Giannelli Imbula, and Alfredo Pedulla explains that the Serie A side will need a quick Kovacic sale to complete their own deals.
“If Inter complete a deal for Imbula similarly to Kondogbia, they will ask Liverpool to up their offer to €30 million [£21.45 million] in order to close a quick operation. Mancini doesn’t want to lose Kovacic, but it seems a sacrifice is inevitable,” the report from Pedulla states.
What would Kovacic offer Liverpool?
At 21 years of age, the technical midfielder was one of Serie A’s standout performers last season, scoring five goals and adding a further three assists in 26 league starts,
Capable of adding defensive duties to his creative style, Kovacic is very much in the mould of Real Madrid star Luka Modric and would be a real coup for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Following the departure of Steven Gerrard, there is a huge void in the Reds’ midfield and a technical star to supplement Jordan Henderson’s graft would be the ideal midfield addition.
