Manchester United reportedly still interested in former Moyes target William Carvalho

Manchester United have once again been linked with a rising star at Sporting Lisbon.

Back when David Moyes was manager of Manchester United one player was linked with the club more than most and that was Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The Daily Mail reported in December 2013 that United had scouted the youngster on a number of occasions and Moyes was considering a January move. But that did not happen and the Scot was dismissed at the end of the campaign, leaving any interest in William to seemingly fizzle out as a result.

Or perhaps not, because the Daily Mail is now reporting that United remain interested in William.

After a breakout campaign at Sporting, William’s most recent season was a more subdued affair. He still played well but perhaps not always at the impressively high level that generated considerable buzz back in 2013.

Still, he ended last season with 42 appearances for Sporting, scoring once and providing five assists in that time, and the defensive midfielder now has 76 games for the Portuguese side under his belt.

With no time to rest, the alleged United target headed straight to the Under-21 Euro Championship and while it is a long way from last summer’s World Cup exploits it shows how young William remains.

The 23-year-old is going to be a very fine footballer but it will be interesting to see if United do ultimately make a move so long after Moyes reportedly identified him as one to watch…time and time again as it turned out.

United certainly need a quality holding midfielder but with the Mail reporting that it will cost a fee in excess of £30million to sign him, will manager Louis van Gaal deem him worth it?
