According to a report from the Sun, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele for £12million this summer.
We have seen some crazy rumours already this summer, but this has to be among the least likely of all.
Dembele did not get as many chances as he would have liked at White Hart Lane last season, with the 27-year-old only showing glimpses of what he can do when played in the number 10 position. But a move to Chelsea is not going to improve his chances of getting a regular starting spot.
After all, the reigning Premier League champions currently have a whole host of quality midfielders with Oscar, Willian, Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas et al and adding Dembele into the mix makes little sense.
With a contract at Tottenham until the summer of 2017 it will take a pretty sizeable bid to tempt the club into business, but Chelsea…really?
If Dembele does move on it is far more likely to be to a club where he can be a first-choice starter, especially when you consider his age and the fact that his next move is likely to be the one that defines his later years.
Of course a move to a side challenging both domestically and in Europe will always appeal, but Chelsea also have a number of talented young players coming through the ranks while attacking midfielder Nathan only recently arrived at Stamford Bridge.
This one just does not make sense, and in truth Tottenham would be wise to give Dembele more chances in his preferred position with strength in depth vital for Pochettino next season.
