Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are reportedly interested in signing the 27-year-old in the summer transfer window.
Former Celtic striker Sutton has suggested in The Daily Record that Celtic may not be willing to stump up £4m, as Anya has just one year left on his current contract with newly-promoted Premier League outfit Watford.
“Everything is relative and we must be realistic about the market Celtic are in,” the 42-year-old wrote in The Daily Record. “Let’s take Anya first. He has a year left on his deal and Watford will want maximum money for him.
“But why would Celtic pay the reported £4m when they know a year down the line he’ll be available for free?”
Sutton’s question is interesting and one that the Celtic chiefs may themselves be pondering upon.
However, the problem with waiting for Anya is that he could be given a new deal by Watford midway through the 2015-16 season, or a club bigger than Celtic could make a swoop for him in January or next summer.
If the Scotland international has a great season for Watford in the Premier League, then it will make it tough for Celtic to sign him next summer due to the competition they will face.
