Could Leeds United be closing in on a lucrative summer signing?
At the end of May, the Sun reported that Leeds owner Massimo Cellino was prepared to pay the midfielder £1million a year if he moved to Elland Road and the latest odds suggest the Whites are closing in on the player.
Barton knows what it takes to earn promotion from the Championship having done just that with former club Queens Park Rangers, and following his release there are likely to be plenty of sides interested in his services.
The latest odds from SkyBet have Leeds as 2/1 favourites with Derby County as 6/1 second favourites. Barton’s former club Marseille are 10/1 while recently-promoted Bournemouth are 12/1.
Leeds have already started to strengthen by signing young goalkeeper Charlie Horton and promising striker Lee Erwin, but what they really need is experience and Barton offers that in abundance.
The 32-year-old played 99 times for QPR and previously turned out 145 times for Manchester City, 84 times for Newcastle United and 33 times while on loan at Marseille.
While Leeds have plenty of young players at their disposal the experience of Barton could be invaluable to their development.
