The Italian superstar has been one of PSG’s leading performers and was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid under former boss Carlo Ancelotti, as per the Spanish paper AS.
Despite the Italian coach’s exit from the Santiago Bernabeu, speculation is still rife over Madrid’s wishes to bolster their midfield ranks and Verratti is an ideal candidate.
However, as per the latest reports in Marca, Los Blancos could find themselves in a transfer war with rivals Barcelona after it emerged the Catalans were also a favoured option for the midfielder.
“Marco Verratti is eager for a change of scene. The Italian midfielder is eyeing the exit door at PSG and would run through it if Real Madrid or Barça were on the other side,” Marca reports.
The 22-year-old started 28 French top-flight matches last season, contributing with eight assists while averaging an impressive three tackles per encounter.
His style is very much similar to Luka Modric, a player the Madrid giants failed to replace accordingly when injuries struck the Croatian late in the season, prompting a run of catastrophic results.
Barcelona, in contrast, have a wealth of options with Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Rafinha all capable of playing the defensive midfield option.
Of the two, Madrid are far more in demand of a natural holding player and bringing in PSG’s Verratti would arguably be the best piece of business they could do all summer.
