Report: Fresh twist in the race for Arsenal-linked Jackson Martinez

Porto’s Jackson Martinez has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

As per the latest reports in Portuguese paper A Bola, Atletico Madrid have joined the race for Arsenal-linked Jackson Martinez and the player has a preference for La Liga.

The Colombia international has dominated the headlines in Portugal over the past couple of weeks as his future at Porto looks to be drawing to a close.

According to various reports, including ESPN, the talented striker had already agreed to a move to Serie A side AC Milan with his chairman Luiz Enrique Pompeo seemingly confirming as much.

Yet, in an ensuing interview with A Bola, Martinez revealed his admiration for Arsenal hero Thierry Henry and spoke in glowing terms of the Gunners, perhaps paving the way for a move to the Emirates.

Now, Atletico Madrid appear to have joined the frame and Diego Simeone’s men are said to be willing to pay his buy-out clause following the sale of striker Mario Mandzukic to Juventus.

“The Spanish club are willing to pay Martinez’s buyout clause £25 million and La Liga is a destination which greatly pleases the striker,” A Bola reports.

Should Arsenal make a move for Jackson Martinez?

The 28-year-old has netted 92 goals in 132 matches in all competitions for Porto, his deadly touch in front of goal without doubt worth his reported buy-out clause alone.

However, the striker isn’t a like-for-like alternative to Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and there would be no promises of Martinez having the same sort of connection with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

While the France international isn’t exactly a real goal-getter, his link-up play brings the best out of Arsene Wenger’s real crown jewels and that is often overlooked by Premier League viewers.

Signing Martinez would guarantee goals, but could he ultimately improve the team? It would be a big risk, and at £25 million perhaps one that isn’t worth taking.
