Report: Everton make bid for Gregoire Defrel

Everton

Cesena ace Gregoire Defrel has reportedly attracted the attention of a number of clubs.

According to a report in the Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Everton have made a £3.6 million proposal for Cesena’s highly-rated striker Gregoire Defrel.

The French-born number nine had a wonderful personal campaign in Serie A last season, scoring nine goals and assisting a further five in 31 league starts.

As reported by the Daily Star, the Toffees made an enquiry over the striker during the January transfer window, with Queens Park Rangers and West Bromwich Albion also linked.

The Baggies were reported to have sent an emissary over to watch him in action, although their interest failed to materialise into a January transfer as they were seemingly beaten by the deadline cut-off.

Now, it appears Roberto Martinez’s Everton side are pushing to the front of queue as La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that they have made an offer for the striker.

Do Everton need a new striker?

Everton signed Romelu Lukaku on a permanent contract from Chelsea last summer, but 24-year-old Defrel is a different type of striking proposition as he is capable of moving into wider areas.

Also happy to play as a winger, the former Parma ace is a keen dribbler and chips in from a creative perspective – averaging 1.2 key passes per league encounter last term.

With Lukaku through the middle, the Toffees need more options either side of the Belgian international, and Cesena’s Defrel is a typically talented Martinez type of player.

If the Toffees are to see Defrel as their ideal summer striker option, then they will have to move quickly as a number of fellow Italian clubs also see him as a potential coup, as per the report in La Gazzetta dello Sport.
