Liverpool have made their fourth signing of the summer.
Gomez completed his £3.5million signing from Championship side Charlton Athletic on Saturday, and was quick to express his delight at the move…even if it will take a while to fully sink in.
In comments published by Liverpool’s official website, the 18-year-old said, “It’s a dream come true. It’s a bit surreal and it hasn’t really hit me yet. But I’m buzzing and just excited to get started.”
Gomez is a centre-back who can also play in either full-back position if required and his versatility will come in very handy for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
The teenager played 24 matches for Charlton last season, swapping between central defence and right-back, and if he is to break through in the short term at Anfield it is likely to be in the latter position given the recent departure of Glen Johnson and the fact that Emre Can is more commonly known as a midfielder despite his recent spell at the back.
An England under-19 international, Gomez is highly-rated, but Liverpool fans will no doubt be hoping his move from The Valley is more successful than Jonjo Shelvey’s big-money switch back in 2010.
