Liverpool have signed England Under-19 international Gomez from Charlton Athletic, as announced on the Premier League outfit’s official website on Saturday.
The 18-year-old is a highly-rated defender who can play as a centre-back as well as a full-back.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher is happy to see the Reds sign another promising young player, but he wonders what effect this will have on Wisdom’s future at Anfield.
“Starting with Gomez's arrival especially with him being able to play RB & CB means there will be question marks now over Andre Wisdom's future & having been on loan for the last couple of years I'm sure he will want regular football,” the former England international wrote on Kicca.com.
“There has been plenty of young defenders signed over the last decade or so for Lfc who've never quite made the grade Palletta, Coates, Wilson, Ayala, San Jose, & Ilori who still has time to change that, it basically comes from a lack of game time but crucially not taking their chance on the rare occasions they were chosen some have gone on to have good careers but Lfc sign players to play for us not to develop them for others.
“Hopefully Joe Gomez will change that he’s an England U19 international & has performed well for Charlton athletic and comes with a good pedigree.”
Wisdom has been on the books of Liverpool since 2008 and is 22 years of age, which means that he is coming to a stage in his career where he needs to play regularly.
The English youngster played on loan at Derby County and West Bromwich Albion during the past two seasons, and it will come as a disappointment to him if he is sent out on loan again this summer.
However, Liverpool could also decide to send Gomez on loan to a club in the Premier League or in the Championship for the 2015-16 campaign.
Gomez is only 18 years of age and is unlikely to feature regularly in the Liverpool first team next season.
