A former Everton star has had his say on one of the current first-team players.
The Belgian international moved permanently to Goodison Park last summer, after a previous loan spell from Chelsea saw him score 16 goals in 36 matches on Merseyside.
Last season he added another 20 goals to that tally, giving him a total of 36 goals in just 81 matches for Everton to suggest he could in time become one of the most prolific front-men in Europe; an assessment Lineker appears to agree with.
“He could be a really top striker and I think he will be,” Lineker said in comments published by EvertonFC.com. “He has got pace, he has got power and he can finish.
“Sometimes he can get a bit tired, as you would expect from a lad that age and of that size. But he has definitely got something, and he is way off his best years yet.”
It is worth remembering that Lukaku is still only 22; a fact that could come as a surprise to some considering just how long he has been around.
Signing for Chelsea in a multi-million-pound deal as a teenager thrust him into the spotlight, and a wonderful loan spell at West Bromwich Albion showed just what he was capable of when played week in, week out.
He has continued that fine form at Everton and with plenty of time to develop his game and get even better, Everton fans should be very excited about their young Belgian star.
With the right summer additions, there is every chance Roberto Martinez’s side can enjoy a wonderful campaign, and with slightly more consistency in his game, Lukaku could soon be averaging a goal at least every other game with relative ease.
