Could Aston Villa be about to sign another defender?

According to a report from Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb, Aston Villa are interested in signing Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna this summer.

The report claims that while TuttoSport has linked the centre-back with a potential move to Bologna, Tim Sherwood’s side are also monitoring the situation.

Ogbonna played 30 times for the Champions League runners-up last season and has a total of 55 appearances for the Turin-based club.

Prior to that he featured 160 times for Torino and his experience marks him out as a potentially great addition to Villa’s squad.

Ogbonna also has 10 caps for Italy and while he featured just once in Juventus’s march to the Champions League final he has plenty to offer.

What would it mean for the current Villa players?

With doubts remaining over the long-term future of Ron Vlaar, and Nathan Baker regularly absent through injury, Villa could do with some more defensive reinforcements, even with Micah Richards signing on a free transfer last week.

Ciaran Clark and Jores Okore are also on the club’s books but squad depth will be vital next season, so Villa fans may be hoping TMW's latest report is true.

Ogbonna is predominantly a central defender but he can also play as a left-back if required and that versatility marks him out as a viable summer
