Tottenham fans react on Twitter to Tom Carroll performance for England's under-21s

Tom Carroll low quality

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have given their views on Tom Carroll's performance as England's under-21 side lost 1-0 against Portugal last night.

England’s under-21 side didn’t get off to a great start in their bid to win the European Championship, as they went down 1-0 at the hands of Portugal.

Gareth Southgate named a strong side for the match, which including Tottenham Hotspur pair Tom Carroll and Harry Kane, along with talented midfielder Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse.

However, they weren’t able to prevent the Three Lions from falling to defeat in their opening game and England now have it all to do to as they look to get back on track.

It may have surprised one or two Spurs fans that Carroll got the nod ahead of another of the club’s talented younger players in Alex Pritchard.

However, Carroll did well during a loan spell with Swansea City in the Premier League last season, performing at a higher level than Pritchard, who was superb during a loan spell with Brentford in the Championship.

Due to the core of Tottenham players in the England under-21 side, manager Mauricio Pochettino is likely to have been watching on or will at least review the action at some point in the near future.

The problem Carroll has in terms of leaving an impression on the Argentine, is that central midfield is one of the most heavily congested areas of the Tottenham squad.

For Carroll to displace players like Ryan Mason, Mousa Dembele, Nabil Bentaleb or others, he needs to be consistent and exceptional with every chance he gets to feature in a high profile and high intensity contest.

He’s got to find a way of leaving an impression in the mind of his club boss, as he looks to fight for a chance with Spurs at the start of next season, as the club goes after the top four.

Here’s what Tottenham fans made of Carroll’s performance on Twitter.
