The Aston Villa and Celtic legend wants to see the club go all out to sign two transfer targets.
Petrov - now assistant coach at Aston Villa - said: “I read that [Ikechi] Anya and [Steven] Fletcher were potential Celtic targets but that money could be an issue. But a team like Celtic should always have two or three big names, really big stars.
“That is what the Celtic fans are looking for. They want new, exciting players.”
Anya, currently playing for Watford, is certainly one of those ‘exciting’ players he references, with the talented winger a player who can impress the fans with his attacking style.
He always plays well for Scotland, and although form for the Hornets can be hit-and-miss, when playing to the best of his abilities he is a real talent.
Steven Fletcher is less exciting than Anya, and his career with Sunderland has failed to live up to expectation. He would be more of a risky signing, with wages a real issue for the Bhoys, and there is no guaranteed pay-off, unlike with Anya’s improved performances.
Still, Petrov wants Celtic to sign these exciting players, with there not really a player like that in the current ranks, and it is hard to deny that deals for both players would be a real statement of intent from the club, with a strong season in the Champions League needed to move the club to the next level.
