Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given explained that he doesn’t know what’s going to happen with regards to Christian Benteke’s future, when he appeared as a guest on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT.
Regardless of the rumours, which exist surrounding the talented Belgian, Given told talkSPORT that he hopes his club can keep him.
“I don’t know because there’s different speculation everyday – There are a lot of big clubs apparently looking around him and he’s finished the season on a real high and his goals alone are probably what’s kept us in the league – For me personally I hope we keep him,” he said.
Benteke was in revitalised form under Tim Sherwood, which was one of the main reasons Villa were able to preserve their Premier League status last season.
The downside is that his match winning performances seem to have triggered interest in him, with any Premier League club looking for a new striker likely to consider him an option ahead of the new season.
Aston Villa can’t offer Champions League football, but they can offer him number one status in terms of his position at the club.
He is very much the main man in the club’s attack and someone who will have a big say on the fortunes of his club side next season.
If it becomes obvious that the situation is untenable for Sherwood, Villa will need to press hard to get the best possible price for him, but hopefully he’ll still be part of the club’s attack next year.
