Forgotten Liverpool defender impressed for Portugal up against Tottenham and England's Harry Kane.
On the day Liverpool edged closer to signing another centre-back, one they paid £7 million for and haven't given a first team opportunity to re-announced himself in dramatic fashion.
Tiago Ilori helped Portugal's under-21 side to keep a clean sheet against England in a 1-0 win, expertly snuffing out the threat of Tottenham sensation Harry Kane, who scored at Anfield this past season.
The Guardian had reported hours earlier that Liverpool had agreed a fee and set up a medical for teenager Joe Gomez from Charlton. Ilori showed the teenager will have to join the queue.
Signed from Sporting Lisbon by Brendan Rodgers in 2013, he has been loaned out without getting a crack to yet show what he can do as a Liverpool player.
Last season it was French side Bordeaux, before that Spanish club Granada.
Considering the woeful displays defensively at times from Liverpool defenders last season, step forward Dejan Lovren, Ilori showed he is more than ready to seize his chance.
Sure enough, the Liverpool Echo since reported the 22-year-old will get a chance to show what he can do in pre-season. More performances like he did up against England will seal the deal.
Ilori's display had Reds fans raving on Twitter, and questioning quite why they have not seen more of him. Here's a look at the reaction...
Well hello Ilori - where have you been hiding? Has he let Kane out of his back pocket yet? #LFC— 5haqz (@SIRashid83) June 19, 2015
Why not keep Ilori and Coates as back ups to potentially become first teamers? Can they be worse than Lovren and Toure? #lfc— Jared Louw (@jaredlouw) June 19, 2015
Tiago Ilori pocketed Harry Kane tonight, he has to play for us next year, not exactly blessed in the CB department #LFC— Joe Ferman (@JoeFerman) June 18, 2015
Tiago Ilori was boss tonight, kept Kane very quiet... surely has to be in with a shout for us next year. #LFC— James Kay (@JimmyKay88) June 18, 2015
Really hope young Thiago Ilori gets a chance to prove himself at #LFC this year!!— Not Blunt (@razorsharpe09) June 19, 2015
As the current defence concede about 50 goals per season, could back 4 of Clyne-Gomez-Ilori-Flanagan really be any worse? I doubt it. #LFC— FSG=FansSeemGullible (@WonFortyOne) June 19, 2015
Instead of finding another CB, #LFC should give chance to Ilori after his impressive performance for Portugal U21. Should justify his £7M— Stephen #LFC (@stephen_ks) June 19, 2015
Dream : ilori get chances Reality : Rodgers prefers british player, joe gomez gets more chances #LFC— Liverpool FC (@LFCsites) June 19, 2015
