Gallery: England fall short in Euro under-21 opener against Portugal

Three Lions close

Stoke, West Ham, Southampton, Norwich, Tottenham and Liverpool all had representation on show last night.

England's under-21 European Championship campaign didn't get off to the best of starts on Thursday as they were edged out 1-0 by a very talented Portugal side in the Czech Republic.

Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane led the line for the Young Lions after an impressive Premier League season for his club but couldn't find that kind of form to help England to a win in their opening game.

On the face of things it was a pretty evenly matched encounter, with both sides managing close to 20 shots on goal, and England seemed to react pretty well to the disappointments prior to the game which saw Everton's John Stones and West Bromwich Albion's Saido Berahino ruled out of action for two games and for the tournament respectively.

They will have been disappointed about the way they conceded the ultimately decisive goal as Joao Mario scored after a header from Bernardo Silva rebounded off the post - it seemed a pretty soft goal to concede.

Now there is a lot of pressure on Gareth Southgate and his players to find ways to win their next two games against Sweden and Italy in order to improve on their dismal showing from the last campaign in this competition under Stuart Pearce, and to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Here are some of the best images from last night's defeat:
