Southampton captain Jose Fonte's continued Portugal ascent shows the merits of staying put

Regular international football and European competition are both available at the Saints for Fonte, despite reported Liverpool links emerging last season.

Southampton skipper Jose Fonte has proven to a whole bunch of departed Saints stars, not to mention the current squad, that it is possible to achieve your dreams while playing for the South Coast squad.

Fonte has been linked with Liverpool in the last couple of months by sources such as the Mirror, but the 31-year-old only has to take a look at his former defensive partner to see that things aren't necessarily as rosy as they seem if you 'graduate' to a club as big as Liverpool.

Dejan Lovren was one of the most highly rated central defenders in the Premier League after his debut season in England. The Croatian arrived from Lyon and enjoyed a stellar campaign under Mauricio Pochettino, to the extent that, when Liverpool signed him for a lot of money just one year later, many though the Reds had completed a superb signing.

However, things haven't worked out so well for the 25-year-old, and at times Lovren has found himself on the bench for Liverpool.

Fonte on the other hand has proved that it is not necessary for players to leave the Saints in order to further their career. At his ripe old age, the defender made his debut for Portugal last November, and in each of the four games has has played, Portugal have emerged victorious.

The latest of these, away to Italy, saw Fonte play 90 minutes for his country for the first time. And if he is to play in the Europa League next season just like his former defensive partner Lovren, it is pretty clear that the former Crystal Palace can achieve pretty much everything he wants at St Mary's.
