Aston Villa will fancy their chances on the opening day of the Premier League campaign against AFC Bournemouth and Given has also called on the club to back Sherwood completely as he looks to go about improving the squad over the summer.
“Tim’s done a great job keeping us in the Premier League because we were second bottom when he took over and confidence was low,” he said.
“It’s important he gets the right backing in the summer and he gets the right amount of money to bring players in and strengthen the squad – We should be in the top half at least challenging for European positions.”
Sherwood has already done some good work in terms of improving his team for next season, with a permanent deal for Scott Sinclair already sewn up and the Guardian reporting that a deal for defender Micah Richards is imminent.
It’s important that Sherwood is given the freedom to improve his squad because Villa’s run-in last season showed how bare the cupboard is when certain players were unavailable through injury.
It’s going to take an exceptional season from Villa to go from a side that was fending off the threat of relegation to a side, which is seriously challenging for a place in Europe.
However, one of the main things and ideas that Sherwood has developed since his been at the club is a diehard belief in being positive and backing the ability of his players.
Hopefully he’ll be given the same backing as the board, even if the season doesn’t start as he’ll be hoping.
