Liverpool are moving ahead with their efforts to sign Chalrton Athletic's Joe Gomez, report The Guardian.
The report states Gomez is due to undergo a medical at Liverpool on Friday (tomorrow) after a £3.5 million fee was agreed between the two clubs.
Gomez would be the club's fourth summer signing, following Danny Ings from Burnley, James Milner from Manchester City, and Bolton Wanderers' Adam Bogdan.
The centre-back is an exciting prospect and England under-19 international, who had two years left to run on his Charlton contract.
Gomez, 18, played in 24 first team games for Charlton in 2014/15. He will follow in the footsteps of Jonjo Shelvey, now of Swansea City, who left Charlton for Liverpool in 2010.
Knock on effects
Coates has a strong end to the season on loan with the Black Cats, but is currently playing at the Copa America with Uruguay, which is likely to delay progress on a deal.
Another player whose future is put in doubt by the Gomez deal is Tiago Ilori, who spent last season out on loan at Bordeaux.
Ilori, 22, has not played a competitive game for Liverpool since signing for the club under Brendan Rodgers from Sporting Lisbon in 2013.
