Manchester United youngster Jesse Lingard was the beneficiary of a pre-game injury to Saido Berahino to land a spot in England's starting line-up at the under-21 European Championships.
The prospect was linked with a season long loan deal to Newcastle United by The Telegraph earlier this week.
He is reported to be a target for Steve McClaren, who signed him on loan at Derby County over the second half of last season in the Championship.
Lingard played 73 minutes in the match with Portugal, substituted for striker Danny Ings after England went 1-0 down and manager Gareth Southgate chased an equaliser.
The Young Lions were unsuccessful on that front, starting their campaign off with a loss, but Lingard will have hoped to have done enough to earn another starting role.
The midfielder created three goalscoring opportunities, more than any other England player. He had two shots on goal but both were off target.
He completed 86 per cent of his passes, and was fouled four times, managing just one successful dribble. Lingard was more effective in the first half, losing influence in the second as Portugal took control.
It was an opportunity for Newcastle fans to take a look at him, and the reaction of supporters on Twitter suggested they liked what they saw...
Having seen Lingard for 5 minutes he would be a HUGE upgrade on what we currently have. Looks decent. #nufc— Matthew Balmforth (@Matt_Rant) June 18, 2015
More non-Newcastle reaction to Lingard's performance...
To think Lingard would have been on the bench if it wasn't for injury! Been England's best player, constant threat, attacks flow through him— Sam (@ImNoMortalSam) June 18, 2015
Lingard is England's most liveliest player— jordan (@jordz8687) June 18, 2015
