Liverpool fans react to Emre Can's midfield Germany under-21 performance on Twitter

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can scored for Germany's under-21 side.

Liverpool star Emre Can showed what he can do in midfield by netting in Germany's opening game of the European under-21 Championships.

His equalising goal was scored from the edge of the box after a neat turn, but was not enough to earn his side a win, with Serbia holding them to a 1-1 draw.

Can was captaining Germany, and showed encouraging leadership qualities which will come in handy if he is to one day step into the shoes of Steven Gerrard at Liverpool.

The former Bayer Leverkusen prospect was playing in his favoured central midfield position, surely a welcome relief considering the way he was torn apart in defence during his last game of the season for Liverpool in the 6-1 loss to Stoke.

Can was only really played in defence due to a combination of injuries to Jon Flanagan, and the woeful debut season of Dejan Lovren, but he clearly has his limitations in the position, while in midfield the sky may be the limit.

He made only six Premier League starts in midfield for Liverpool last season, as opposed to 21 in defence.

With Gerrard gone, there is a void in midfield which will give Can opportunities, despite the arrival of free transfer James Milner.

Can's performance over the 90 minutes last night will have been a message to manager Brendan Rodgers if he was watching, that he deserves more opportunities in his favoured position, and the Reds are fortunate to have him.
