Martin Skrtel has committed to a new deal, according to reports, after fairly protracted discussions.
The Slovakian has reportedly rejected a move to join Serie A side Inter Milan in the process, and ends several months of talks.
There were concerns he wouldn't sign a new deal but manager Brendan Rodgers will be pleased to have one of his more experienced members of the side committed to a new deal - especially after losing the wise heads of Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson.
He has been Rodgers' first choice centre-back whenever he has been available, usually partnering either Dejan Lovren or Mamadou Sakho. Skrtel would follow fellow defender Kolo Toure and Andre Wisdom in signing a new deal.
The reaction among Liverpool fans was mixed - some were very happy but there has been some scathing criticism of the defender, saying it was indicative of the mediocre season Liverpool had last term where they finished outside the Champions League places, and without silverware.
He was, however, part of a defence that broke a 30-year clean sheet record in the top flight away from home during the second half of the season - and seemed to relish the role in the back three - but has struggled like the rest of the defenders at other times.
Here is a flavour of the reaction on Twitter:
So Skrtel has agreed a new contract, suppose it's good news.. So damn inconsistent— Pedro (@Dowdello) June 18, 2015
Giving contracts to Wisdom, Flanagan and now Skrtel. The mediocrity within the club is flying high as ever— Darren (@MegaD3ltaUK) June 18, 2015
Looks like Skrtel has singed a new contract. Need to keep the little experience we do have and players that know the club. #LFC— Shushil Patel (@shushp) June 18, 2015
Skrtel set to sign a new contract. Good news! Just wish they could get contracts done the first time though— ShahLFC (@ShahLFC94) June 18, 2015
So Tiago Ilori doesn't even get a chance because Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure defo deserve new contracts. Absolute joke.— James (@James_Cou10) June 18, 2015
Skrtel is bang average. Lovren could do a job in the middle of a back 3 as well as he could.— Jésper (@LFCallum) June 18, 2015
Mixed reaction in #LFC fans for Skrtel.Some say he's good & to some he's pathetic.Rafa signed him,Kenny played him.Surely can't be that bad— Sandman Sandeep (@AnfieldEggHead) June 18, 2015
You stick a solid holding midfielder in front of the defence and you can probably get away with Skrtel for the most part.— PhantomGoal (@PhantomGoal) June 18, 2015
Skrtel is a fantastic defender. He could be better but he brings experience and is a big game player. Great news that he's staying. #LFC— LFC Army (@lfcarmy2015) June 18, 2015
Skrtel's positional sense is terrible, only looks good making recovery tackles because he's in the wrong position in the first place.— Anfield Hub (@AnfieldHub) June 18, 2015
