Arsenal, Manchester United fans react on Twitter to William Carvalho's performance v England

Reported Arsenal and Manchester United target William Carvalho seized his opportunity to impress against England's under-21 side.

This time 12 months ago William Carvalho was impressing for Portugal at the World Cup.

A year later he was asked to drop down into his country's under-21 squad for the European under-21 Championships, and showed he was a class apart, in a 1-0 win over England.

Just days earlier he had been playing for the senior side in Euro 2016 qualifying, and he may well have put himself back on the radar of several Premier League clubs.

Last season Talksport claimed Manchester United had agreed a £35 million deal to sign the central midfielder. This proved not to be the case, and just last month The Mirror claimed Arsenal were considering making a move for the Sporting Lisbon star.

He looked like a man among boys against England, with his physically imposing frame making him one of the more eye-catching performers, helping prevent Gareth Southgate's side flourish in attack.

Carvalho made 86 touches - more than any England player, and won six aerial duels, the highest in the Portugal side. He also won four tackles, more than the rest of Portugal's midfield combined.

His passing accuracy was recorded at 81 per cent, with one chance created.

Portugal will be delighted their decision to bring him back into the under-21 fold paid off, and they are now in a strong position to qualify.

His display saw his name trending on Twitter, and Arsenal and Manchester United fans had much to say regarding the midfielder putting himself back on the map, potentially re-igniting his chances of a summer transfer to the Premier League.

Here is a look at what they had to say...
